Included is also a global list of over 4700 genera or subgenera. Brachiopods are powerful tools for stable isotope paleotemperature analyses (their stable mineralogy locks in clues to ancient ocean temperature and salinity), and community and environmental interpretations of ancient sediments. They are frequently the best index fossils for regional and global correlations because of their sheer abundance, rapid evolution and diversity. Brachiopod radiation and extinction patterns provide a valuable data base in plotting the passage of catastrophic events, and the selective nature of subsequent recoveries. *Brachiopods is a volume which must lay on the desk of each brachiopod specialist and in the library of each Palaeontology Department.
