Die Ostsahara gilt als größter hyperarider Raum der Erde. Jüngste Forschungen haben gezeigt, dass in den letzten ca. 13000 Jahren ein geradezu dramatischer Klimawandel abgelaufen ist. Der Widerspruch zu der heutigen Aridität und der Tatsache eines Wasserexports aus den großen Becken der Ostsahara an die nordafrikanische Küste wird vor dem Hintergrund der geologischen und paläoklimatischen Entwicklung diskutiert. Die Rekonstruktion des ostsaharischen Geoökosystems führte jüngst zu überraschenden Ergebnissen. So erwiesen sich beispielsweise einige schwer zugängliche Synklinalen der Ostsahara als bedeutendeWasserdampfquellen. Ihre Existenz im Inneren des Kontinents
führte zu einem rückgekoppelten System mit niederschlagsauslösendem Effekt und Grundwasserbildung.
